The movie "Hackers" is a strange piece of media in that it was so clearly over the top, unrealistic, and even insulting, but after it came out, those of us in that scene only wished we could attain those levels of gay.
This seriously is an observatory that needs to be saved. It still has so much life left, it's critical for supplementing observations of transient events, which is a big focus in astronomy right now: being able to record events that only last a few minutes to a few hours across as many wavelengths as possible. In the grand scheme of things, it costs peanuts to fund. Losing this observatory is going to be a huge blow to high-energy astronomy
Please, if you're an American, write to your reps. This thing is a treasure to the whole world.
